Hardware questions
What hardware does 8Kava make?
Smart coolers (Kava Cooler C2 and C2-XL), a smart spiral vending machine (Kava Vend V4), a micro-market self-checkout (Kava Kiosk K1), a walk-in micro-store (Kava Box B160), smart lockers (Kava Lockers LX), a PPE dispenser (Kava PPE P1), a weatherized cooler (Kava Outdoor O1) and the Kava Link L2 retrofit kit. Compare them on the hardware overview.
How does a smart cooler know what I took?
Four edge cameras (six on the C2-XL) see what moved, and per-shelf load cells with ±2 g resolution confirm what left. An on-device neural processor fuses both signals, which is how Kava Cooler reaches 99.4% checkout accuracy, audited against restock counts. Vision AI explains the method.
Do I have to replace my existing vending machines?
Usually not. Kava Link L2 connects to the MDB bus and DEX port of most legacy machines in a median 22 minutes, for $349. It adds real-time telemetry, remote pricing and cashless passthrough, and retrofitted machines average 18% more revenue in their first 90 days.
What does a Kava Cooler need from my building?
A standard 115 V outlet and floor space: the C2 is 30 inches wide, 32 deep and 80 tall, and the C2-XL is 54 inches wide. It connects over LTE Cat-4, Wi-Fi 6 or Ethernet, so it doesn't depend on your building's network.
What happens if a cooler gets too warm?
Kava Cooler holds 33–41 °F. If the interior stays above 41 °F for 30 minutes, the door locks automatically and an alert goes out, so warm food isn't sold. Every reading is logged for food-safety audits.
Can 8Kava hardware run outdoors or off the grid?
Kava Outdoor O1 has an IP55 enclosure, vandal-resistant laminated glass and an operating range of −22 °F to 113 °F. Paired with the SC-800 solar canopy (800 W of panels and a 5 kWh battery), it runs at sites with no grid power.
Software questions
What is Kava OS?
The cloud platform that runs every 8Kava device and every connected legacy machine, with a web console, an iOS and Android operator app and a driver app. Modules cover telemetry, forecasting, pricing, payments, analytics, maintenance, retail media and Kava Agent. Start at the platform overview.
Does Kava OS work with machines and readers from other manufacturers?
Yes. It works with MDB-compliant machines and cashless readers and reads DEX/UCS audit data. Kava Link handles the physical connection on legacy machines.
What does Kava Agent actually do?
It drafts and publishes pre-kitting pick lists, re-sequences the day's route, proposes and applies price changes within your guardrails, opens and dispatches service tickets, drafts supplier restock orders and answers plain-English questions about the business. Details on the Kava Agent page.
How much control do I have over the agent?
All of it. Each action type is set to Suggest, Approve or Auto, and Auto only works inside guardrails you define, such as max ±15% or never below cost. The agent observes for 14 days before proposing autonomous actions, every action is logged, and price changes roll back with one click.
Does Kava OS connect to our other systems?
Yes. There are connectors for ERP and procurement (SAP, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics), HRIS and payroll (Workday, ADP, UKG), identity (Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace) and data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks). Autopilot and Enterprise add REST API access and webhooks.
Payment questions
How do shoppers pay?
With EMV contactless cards, mobile wallets, the Kava app or QR code, employee badges or payroll deduct. A Kava Cooler door opens in under a second after the tap, and the receipt is final within 10 seconds of the door closing.
Can I keep my current payment processor?
Yes. Bring your own processor at no markup and keep your MDB cashless readers. Or use Kava Pay at interchange-plus 0.35% + $0.05 per transaction.
What does Kava Pay cost on a typical purchase?
Interchange plus 0.35% + $0.05. On a $4.25 snack, that's about 6.5 cents above interchange; on a $10 meal, 8.5 cents.
Do shoppers pay a convenience fee for using a card?
No. 8Kava imposes no cashless convenience fee on shoppers. The price on the door is the price they pay.
Can an employer subsidize food or offer payroll deduct?
Yes, through Payments & Loyalty on Pro and above. Subsidies and payroll deduct connect to HRIS and payroll systems such as Workday, ADP and UKG through file or API connectors. See how it works for workplaces.
What if a shopper thinks they were charged incorrectly?
They can write to support@8kava.com at any hour with the location and time. On Kava Vend, guaranteed vend refunds the shopper automatically if the drop sensor sees no product fall.
Pricing questions
How much does Kava OS cost?
Core is $19, Pro $39 and Autopilot $69 per connected device per month, or $16.15, $33.15 and $58.65 with annual billing at 15% off. Enterprise is custom, with volume pricing from 250 devices. Full details on pricing.
Is there a setup fee or a long-term contract?
There's no setup fee for software and no long-term contract on monthly plans. Vending-as-a-Service is the one fixed term, at 36 months.
What is Vending-as-a-Service?
One monthly price for hardware, Kava OS Pro and service on a 36-month term, from $99 a month for a Kava Kiosk K1 or $189 for a Kava Cooler C2. At end of term, the hardware is refurbished and redeployed. See Vending-as-a-Service.
Is there a free trial?
Yes: 30 days of Pro on up to 10 devices. Legacy machines need Kava Link hardware to take part.
What does the hardware cost to buy?
Kava Link L2 is $349, Kava Kiosk K1 $2,900, Kava Cooler C2 $5,900, C2-XL $8,400, Kava Vend V4 $6,700, Kava Lockers LX-18 $7,400, Kava PPE P1 $9,800, Kava Outdoor O1 $11,900, and Kava Box B160 starts at $64,000.
Deployment and support questions
How fast can we go live?
A smart-cooler program of up to 10 units typically goes live 10 business days after signature. A Kava Box micro-store typically opens in 6 weeks. A Kava Link retrofit takes a median 22 minutes per machine.
Where do you deploy?
Across the continental United States. 8Kava technicians cover the Colorado Front Range, and vetted, 8Kava-trained field partners serve other metros.
What are your support response targets?
Critical device-down issues have a 4-hour remote response target. On-site service is same day in the Colorado Front Range and next business day in served metros. Support and the Network Operations Center run 24/7/365.
Who stocks and cleans the machines?
You, your operator or us. Operators restock from pre-kitted pick lists, and hosts who want none of the work choose Managed Operations.
What happens if the internet goes down?
Every 8Kava device buffers transactions offline for up to 72 hours and syncs when the connection returns. Recognition runs on the device, so checkout keeps working.
How do I know whether my site is a good fit?
Site Intelligence scores traffic, shift patterns, dwell time, nearby competition and format fit before anything ships. If the answer is no, or a smaller format, we'll tell you.
Security and privacy questions
Does 8Kava use facial recognition?
No. Recognition runs on the device and looks at products, not people. No images of faces are stored or sent.
How is our data protected?
Kava OS data is hosted in US regions and encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256). Role-based access limits each user to their job: owner, manager, driver, technician, finance or read-only brand partner.
How do you handle card data?
Kava hardware is built to support PCI DSS scope reduction through P2PE-capable readers from certified processors, so card data is encrypted at the reader. More on our security page.
Do you support single sign-on?
Yes, on Enterprise, via SAML/OIDC, with connectors for Okta, Microsoft Entra ID and Google Workspace.
The question nobody asks is usually the expensive one.
Buyers ask about price, payments and installation. Few ask what happens to the food at 3 a.m. when a compressor fails, or who can see the data when a brand runs a campaign. Before your next vendor call, write down the question your most skeptical colleague would ask. Then send it to us.
