Sustainability

The greenest truck roll is the one that never leaves the lot.

Sustainable vending machines are less about a green sticker and more about what doesn't happen: the kilowatt-hours not drawn, the sandwich not thrown out, the trip not driven. 8Kava measures all three across the units running Kava OS, and builds hardware meant to be repaired rather than replaced.

A1Where the savings come from

Six levers, each one measurable

Natural refrigerant

Every 8Kava refrigerated unit uses R290, a natural refrigerant with a very low global warming potential compared with the HFCs common in older machines.

Adaptive compressor scheduling

Kava OS runs compressors around real door-opening patterns, cutting energy per refrigerated unit by 19%.

Expiry-aware pricing

Fresh food is marked down before it expires, not after. Fresh-food waste falls 33%.

Fewer truck miles

Pre-kitting and dynamic routing cut service visits per device by 27%, so trucks run fewer, fuller trips.

Repairable hardware

Modular camera, lock and compute boards mean a failed part is a swap, not a scrapped cabinet.

Solar-ready outdoor units

Kava Outdoor pairs with an 800 W solar canopy and a 5 kWh battery for sites with no grid power.

A2Energy

The compressor is where the kilowatt-hours go.

In a refrigerated unit, most of the energy goes into moving heat out of the cabinet. A conventional cooler cycles its compressor on the same thermostat rule at the lunch rush and at 2 a.m., when no one has opened the door for hours. Adaptive compressor scheduling learns each unit's real traffic and times the cooling around it, holding the 33–41 °F range while drawing 19% fewer kWh per refrigerated unit.

The same telemetry catches waste that never shows up on a bill until it's large: a door seal that has started to leak, a compressor that runs longer each week, a unit placed next to a heat source. Each becomes a service ticket before it becomes a failure.

  • LED lighting in every 8Kava refrigerated unit.
  • Auto-lock and alert if a cooler stays above 41 °F for 30 minutes, so warm food isn't sold.
  • Compressor health and door-seal alerts in Predictive Maintenance & Energy.
A3Food waste

How expiry-aware pricing keeps sandwiches out of the bin

  1. Know the date

Kava OS tracks fresh items against their expiry, device by device, so a cooler knows which sandwich has the least time left.

  2. Compare stock to demand

Item-level forecasts estimate how many will sell before expiry at full price. The gap is the waste you're about to create.

  3. Mark down inside guardrails

Prices step down within limits you set, such as never below cost, and the new price appears on the door display.

  4. Order less next time

Repeated markdowns feed the next restock, so the cooler gets fewer of what it keeps discounting.

A4Built to come apart

The most sustainable cooler is the one you don't replace.

Hardware has a carbon cost long before it's plugged in. So we design for a long first life and a second one. Camera, lock and compute boards are modular and swap out without touching the cabinet or the refrigeration. When a Vending-as-a-Service term ends, the hardware comes back to us to be refurbished and redeployed, not landfilled.

For operators with existing fleets, the most sustainable machine is often the one already standing in the breakroom. A Kava Link module connects it to Kava OS in a median 22 minutes and draws under 2 W from the machine's own MDB power.

  • Modular camera, lock and compute boards.
  • Refurbish-and-redeploy program for VaaS hardware at end of term.
  • Retrofit a legacy machine instead of replacing it.

B1Retrofit or replace

Two ways to modernize a vending machine

Sometimes replacing is the right call: a machine with failing refrigeration is an energy problem no module can fix. Our retrofit vs. replace guide walks through the decision.

What is the carbon cost of a guess?

A route built from habit carries product that wasn't needed and skips product that was. The waste shows up twice: once in the bin, and once in the fuel it took to deliver food nobody bought. Which of your sustainability numbers would improve if every restock quantity were a forecast instead of a habit?

B4FAQ

Sustainability questions

What is R290, and why does it matter?

R290 is propane used as a refrigerant. It's a natural refrigerant with a very low global warming potential compared with the HFC refrigerants found in many older machines. Every 8Kava refrigerated unit uses it.

How is the 19% energy figure measured?

It's the reduction in kWh per refrigerated unit with adaptive compressor scheduling, aggregated across 8Kava deployments over the trailing 12 months. Your result depends on traffic, placement and ambient temperature.

Can we use Kava OS data in our own sustainability reporting?

Yes. Service visits, markdowns and refrigerated-unit energy data live in Kava OS, and you can export them in CSV or Parquet or send them to Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks.

What happens to VaaS hardware at the end of the term?

It comes back to be refurbished and redeployed. Modular camera, lock and compute boards make that practical, because a worn part can be replaced without replacing the cabinet.

Do solar units work through a Colorado winter?

Kava Outdoor O1 operates from −22 °F to 113 °F ambient. Solar sizing depends on sun exposure and traffic, so we assess each off-grid site before recommending the SC-800 canopy.
