Predictive Maintenance & Energy · Kava OS Autopilot

Fix the door seal on Tuesday, not the spoiled stock on Friday.

Predictive maintenance for vending machines starts with listening to the cabinet. Kava OS watches compressor run cycles, door seals and temperature, opens a ticket before food is at risk, keeps an audit-ready temperature log, and schedules compressors to use 19% less energy.

A1What it watches

The early signs, per cabinet

Compressor health

Run time, cycle frequency and pull-down time after each door event. A compressor that works longer to hold the same temperature is telling you something.

Door seals

A worn gasket shows up as slower recovery and longer run cycles with the door closed, long before anyone sees frost.

Cabinet temperature

Continuous readings against a 33–41 °F range on Kava Cooler, with alerts and a 30-minute auto-lock above 41 °F.

Door events

Held-open and propped doors, matched to temperature, so a warm reading has a cause attached.

Hot and cold lockers

Refrigerated Kava Lockers modules hold 35–40 °F and heated modules 140–165 °F, logged per compartment bank.

Legacy machines

Kava Link adds a temperature probe input and a door switch input to machines that never had either.

A2From early signal to fixed machine

How predictive maintenance turns a failure into a scheduled stop

  1. Signal

Over a week, one cooler's compressor runs longer to reach the same temperature, and recovery after each door opening slows.

  2. Compare

Kava OS compares the cabinet with its own history and with identical units elsewhere in the fleet. The pattern points to the door gasket, not the compressor.

  3. Ticket

A ticket opens with the evidence attached and a likely cause, while the food inside is still at temperature.

  4. Schedule

The repair joins a route that already passes the site. A critical device-down event gets the 4-hour remote response target instead.

  5. Verify

After the new gasket goes in, run cycles return to baseline and the ticket closes with the before-and-after curve attached.

A3Food safety records

The temperature log nobody has to write.

Every 8Kava refrigerated unit records cabinet temperature continuously. If a Kava Cooler stays above 41 °F for 30 minutes, it locks itself and raises an alert, so nobody buys a sandwich that has been warm too long. The excursion, the lock, the corrective action and the reopening are recorded together, in order, as one event.

That gives you HACCP-style records without a clipboard: continuous readings, documented deviations and corrective actions, all exportable for an inspection. The FDA Food Code sets 41 °F (5 °C) as the cold-holding limit for TCS foods; your local health authority decides what a log must show. This is a record-keeping tool, not legal advice.

  • Continuous logging on every refrigerated and heated 8Kava unit.
  • Excursions recorded with cause, action and time to recover.
  • Logs exportable per device, site and date range.

A cooler doesn't fail on the day it stops. It fails on the day it starts working harder.

Almost every refrigeration failure has a quiet stretch first: a gasket leaks a little, a condenser clogs with dust, the compressor runs a few minutes longer each hour. Nobody notices because the food is still cold. If you could see that stretch, how many of last year's emergency calls would have been scheduled stops on a route you were already driving?

C1FAQ

Maintenance and energy questions

Does it work on coolers and machines that aren't 8Kava hardware?

Partly. Kava Link adds temperature probe and door switch inputs to legacy machines, so you get temperature logs, excursion alerts and door events. Compressor-level health and adaptive scheduling need 8Kava refrigerated hardware.

What happens when a cooler gets too warm?

If a Kava Cooler stays above 41 °F for 30 minutes, it locks itself and raises an alert. A ticket opens, and the excursion, lock and corrective action are recorded in the temperature log as one event.

Are the logs enough for a health inspection?

They give you continuous, timestamped records with deviations and corrective actions, exportable by device and date. What an inspector requires varies by jurisdiction, so confirm with your local health authority. This isn't legal advice.

How much energy will I actually save?

Across 8Kava refrigerated units, adaptive compressor scheduling cuts kWh by 19%. As an example, a cooler using 3,000 kWh a year at $0.15 per kWh would save about 570 kWh and $85.50 a year. Your baseline and rates will differ.

Which plan includes it?

Predictive Maintenance & Energy is part of Autopilot at $69 per device per month, or $58.65 with annual billing. Basic temperature alerts are part of Fleet Command on every plan.
